Broom Leys Celebrates Sir David Attenborough with Nature Day

At Broom Leys Primary School, we recently came together to celebrate the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough with a special nature themed day focused on wildlife, conservation and caring for the environment.

Throughout the day, our pupils took part in a range of outdoor activities that helped them explore the natural world. These included bug hunts, pond dipping, making bird feeders and creating habitats for frogs and newts. Our older pupils also took part in outdoor writing activities inspired by nature.

A key part of the day was improving the wildlife areas across our school site. Our Eco Warriors and School Council led planting activities in the wellbeing garden and orchard. Pupils helped to plant fruit, vegetables and sunflowers, and we also began creating a new wildflower meadow. We have named this space the Attenborough Meadow in recognition of Sir David’s work and influence.

We finished the day with a whole school assembly where we came together to sing A Song for Our Planet, reminding everyone of the importance of looking after the environment.

Our Head of School, Hayley Barnard, said:

“Sir David Attenborough has inspired generations to care about the natural world and it was important for us to mark his 100th birthday in a meaningful way.

"The day allowed our pupils to learn about nature through hands on experiences while making a positive difference to their school environment.”

We are also proud to have completed our wellbeing garden and Attenborough Meadow. These spaces have been made possible thanks to the support of local businesses and our wider school community.

We would like to thank Holcim, Redrow Homes, Roberts Coaches, the Co‑op, Ibstock Brick and Sharpes at East Midlands Housing, as well as all our parents and carers who supported the project. Together, you have helped us create spaces that will benefit our pupils for years to come.
