Year 5 Explore Jewish Faith and History During Synagogue Visit

Our Year 5 pupils enjoyed a valuable and enriching visit to the local synagogue as part of their Religious Education studies. The trip offered pupils the opportunity to explore Judaism first hand and deepen their understanding of Jewish worship, traditions and community life.

The visit began in the main synagogue where pupils were introduced to key features used during services. They learnt about the Ark which holds the sacred Torah scrolls, the Menorah which symbolises light and wisdom, and the Bimah which is the raised platform where the Torah is read. Pupils also saw the beautifully handwritten Torah scrolls and listened with interest as their guide explained how each element helps create a space for prayer and learning.

In the learning centre, pupils explored a range of Jewish artefacts that helped bring their classroom studies to life. They examined a Mezuzah, which contains an important Hebrew prayer, and saw items linked to Shabbat including candlesticks and challah bread. Pupils also learnt about the festival of Purim through masks and noise makers that are used during the lively celebrations. These hands‑on activities helped pupils understand how Jewish traditions shape family and community life.

A highlight of the visit was learning about Jewish migration to Leicester. Pupils followed a historical timeline that showed when Jewish families settled in the city, the challenges they faced and the contributions they made to local life. This supported pupils’ understanding of diversity within their own community and how different cultures help shape the wider story of Leicester.

Throughout the visit, Year 5 showed great curiosity and asked thoughtful questions. They represented the school exceptionally well while gaining a deeper appreciation of Judaism and the importance of understanding different faiths.
