Year 6 Discover the Heart of Democracy at the Houses of Parliament
Our Year 6 pupils enjoyed an unforgettable visit to the Houses of Parliament where they explored historic sights, learnt about democracy and experienced real political debate in action. The day began with a scenic walk around the area where pupils had the chance to see several famous London landmarks including Westminster Abbey, the London Eye and the River Thames. From Westminster Bridge they could also spot the Shard in the distance before enjoying a picnic beside the Houses of Parliament.
Inside the Parliamentary Education Centre, Year 6 were divided into smaller groups for their tour. Guides were impressed by the pupils’ existing knowledge about Parliament and by their interest in topics such as the work of the Suffragettes. The tour took pupils through the House of Lords, where they learnt who can become a Lord or Lady, and continued into the viewing gallery above the House of Commons where they watched a live debate.
One of the highlights was walking through Westminster Hall which dates back to the reign of Henry VIII and is the oldest surviving part of the building. Pupils learnt how it has hosted monarchs, world leaders and historic events, including the trial of Guy Fawkes. They also viewed the art installation New Dawn which represents the continuing drive for equality.
The afternoon workshop explored how laws are made and how MPs represent their communities. Pupils were delighted by a special visit from local MP Amanda Hack who took questions and spoke about her role.
A photograph from the trip shows the group lined along Westminster Bridge looking across the River Thames toward the Houses of Parliament with the clock tower rising on the right side of the scene.
Year 6 represented the school brilliantly throughout the day and many left wondering whether a future career in politics awakes them.
