Splashing success at local swimming gala

Broom Leys Primary School’s Year 5 and 6 team were victorious at the recent North West Leicestershire Swimming Gala.

This was the first time Broom Leys had ever won the gala – an event which pits 18 local schools against each other in a series of aquatic races.

14 pupils attended the event at the Whitwick and Coalville Leisure Centre and between them they competed in 20 events. These consisted of individual races for boys and girls in breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke and freestyle.

The climax of the gala, though, were the relay events which took place at the end and saw mixed teams from Year 5 and Year 6 compete against one another in a medley – a combination of breaststroke, butterfly, backstroke and freestyle – and then freestyle-specific race.

A testament to the level of athletic ability displayed by our pupils, our teams finish first in two races and then second in the other two. In their event, the Year 5 Freestyle Team soared into such a commanding lead that they finished a full 10 seconds ahead of the other schools.

Congratulations to all the pupils who took part. They will now go on to represent North West Leicestershire at the County finals, which will be held at Uppingham School in Oakham in June!
